PII Redaction in Voice Conversations: What Stays Clear, What Gets Hidden

Compliance

What PII shows up in conversations

A typical inbound call collects names, phone numbers, email addresses, and often more sensitive identifiers like ID numbers, account numbers, medical references, or financial details. Without redaction, all of these sit in transcripts and recordings in plain text, indexed and searchable.

How automated redaction works

The redaction layer scans every transcript in real time as it is being produced. It identifies PII categories using both pattern matching and contextual recognition. The matched spans are replaced with placeholder tokens in the persistent transcript while staying intact for the agent reasoning step.

What gets redacted by default

Names, phone numbers, email addresses, government ID numbers, account numbers, credit card numbers, dates of birth. The default set covers PDPL-sensitive categories. Tenants can add custom patterns for industry-specific data like medical record identifiers, account references, or internal codes.

What stays clear

The agent needs to know who it is talking to. Within a single call, the agent retains the cleartext PII it needs to provide service. The redaction applies to persistence: the stored transcript, the audit log, the analytics layer. Live reasoning sees the original.

Reversible and irreversible redaction

Some PII can be reversibly redacted if a tenant has the right to retrieve it under specific workflows. Other PII gets one-way hashed. The choice depends on the regulatory regime and tenant policy. The decision is recorded for each redaction event.

Why this matters for buyers

For regulated industries, PII redaction is not a feature. It is a procurement requirement. Banks, healthcare providers, and government agencies will not approve voice AI vendors who store call transcripts in plain text. Redaction has to be on by default, configurable per category, and auditable per redaction event.
